These are the 5 things I do on day one in any new home:
1) Replace the air filters on the HVAC system.
2) Check the smoke detectors and change batteries if necessary.
3) Change all exterior locks.
4) Clean the toilets
5) Clean the fridge and replace the water filter.

I was confused by the smoke alarm commentary. They have to be replaced every ten years due to sensor degradation. I was disappointed when I first learned that. This is a great starter checklist tho.

I dont have replaceable air filters, smoke alarms because i smoke and i hate it going off, a fridge with water, or replaceable locks i have old bronze knobs from the 1800s they dont lock lol
